Abstract
Vision-based motion tracking technologies including marker-based point tracing and image-based edge recognition methods with surveillance cameras were applied to measuring earthquake induced motions and detecting the damage of interior elements during earthquakes. Shaking table tests were carried out to evaluate the optical system's ability to detect structural collapse and overturning of interior elements. The movement of two-story frame structures and rectangular pieces of wood on the shaking table were monitored using conventional video cameras. Results from this exploratory study show that optical measurements are promising in terms of capturing small to large deformations and identifying various kinds of seismic damage.
