A relationship between foundation damage and superstructure damage done by earthquakes was investigated with numerical simulation. Nonlinear response analyses of the soil-pile-structure system were carried out in consideration of the soil-structure interaction, plasticity of soil, pile and structure, and the liquefaction process for sandy soil. It was confirmed that there are inverse correlations between degrees of foundation damage and degrees of superstructure damage. These correlations were observed during the 1995 Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake.
