Rikuu earthquake of 1896 was an inland earthquake with magnitude 7.2, caused 209 fatalities and 5792 collapsed houses in Akita and Iwate prefectures. The authors have been continuing literature surveys on this earthquake utilizing various reports and documents at that time. We newly found “Fuzoku-Gaho” published one month after the event. This is the special issue of popular pictorial magazine and contains detailed damage articles illustrated by many handwrite pictures. From this we could clarified the more detailed damage situation which has not been imaged only from damage statistics.
