Abstract

Basic maps are necessary for research of rural settlements, showing the general shape of the settlement, including streets, building layout and elevation. However, ready-made maps based on civil engineering surveys do not exist especially in many small settlements in developing countries. This paper proposes a method of creating base maps with limited manpower and budget by using GPS and Grasshopper (a plug-in for Rhinoceros). Streets and buildings are measured using equipment such as GPS receivers, and the resulting data is processed by Grasshopper to obtain a three-dimensional map. A case study in the village of Yusuk, Thailand, validated this approach.
