Abstract

In reference to the okuesei (“inwardness”) that is characteristic of Japanese urban design and architecture, this paper uses the layers of permeable space (LPS) of Daikanyama Hillside Terrace, an urban commercial and residential building complex, that concurrently express its spatial strata and visible domains, making the spatial composition apparent and revealing the characteristics of the buildings. At the same time, this paper illustrates that the LPS is an evaluation indicator of okusei that can be easily created and understood by a layperson.
