Abstract

This paper discusses the planning of libraries according to stages of development of the library use. We took questionnaire survey for 15 libraries at Ama town, Shimane prefecture. Ama town, where is one of four islands in Okinoshima, works “design with the whole island as the library” since 2007, and there are a central library and 14 branches. Approximately 70% of libraries users are new residents, who moved away from the island since 2008. New residents use different libraries not only as the place to read or borrow books, but also as the place to carry out various substantial activities.
