Abstract

In this paper, a method to obtain the “inverted membrane shell” advocated by Heinz isler using elastic large deformation analysis using the particle method is proposed. Several analytical examples and their numerical analysis are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. A shape equivalent to a catenary curve, which is a two-dimensional hanging shape, is generated and the feasibility of the hanging shape is determined. Then numerical analysis is used to verify whether tensile stress is generated by membrane stress and whether greater membrane stress is than bending stress.
