Abstract
The Nakumi has a unique natural environment, which is a shallow sea with an average depth of 8.4 meters. This unusual environment has nurtured a variety of bioresources unique to the Nakaumi. Fishermen from the coast of the Nakaumi have developed a diverse variety of fishing techniques suited to the local marine life and conditions in the shallow sea. And they have built up folk knowledge of these techniques, and developed a unique fishing culture. This research discusses how fishermen have previously made their living on the Nakaumi, and the understanding and wisdom underlying their activities. In other words, this research attempts to elucidate one aspect of the "natural environment of the Nakaumi as culture"-by analyzing how fishermen have utilized the Nakaumi environment, and how that was supported by their active recognition of the Nakaumi environment.
