Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the relation between household size and settlement size in the Ainu society in the early 1800s. The average number of household members was 5.01. 136 settlements were clasified into three groups: small household type that is composed only by small households under 5 persons, big household type that is only by big households over 6 persons, and mixed household type that is by small and big households. The numbers of settlements were 21 in the case of small household type, 26 in the case of big househpld type, and 89 in the case of mixed household type. The average numbers of households by settlement were 4 in the case of small household type, 2.3 in the case of big household type, and 8.6 in the case of mixed household type respectively.
