Abstract
The aim of this presentation is to clarify the position of old railway infrastructure as a regional resource, and to clarify the differences in the use of steam locomotive formerly used by the Forestry agency (Numata, Gunma), and salvaged diesel locomotive from the forest railway (Mamurogawa, Yamagata).
In Mamurogawa, by re-activating the old locomotive, their value as tourist attractions have been greatly increased. The Numata steam locomotive is being preserved as an example of steam locomotive technology through the efforts of a volunteer group.
