Study for the area change of Dongting Lake based on the transition of topographical maps

Abstract

The area of the lake reduction becomes the difficult problem now in a maintenance
side of wetlands in the world. Including the Aral Sea, Caspian Sea and Chadian lake have a problem of the areareduction. In the Dongting lake located at the midstream of the Chang Jiang,
the area until the early 19th century reached about 6,000km² and, by the next
earth and sand sedimentation and artificial farmland reclamation, reduced it in
about 2,820km² in 1998. We examined a concrete process of the area of the Dongting
lake reduction through a past map in this study.
