Social ecological systems are Complex Dynamic Systems (CAS) that involve constant change in their natural and human elements. But so far, the role of various abiotic factors and their scales has been largely overlooked in SES studies. Disturbance on the abiotic environment is increasingly affecting the biotic environment. Especially for spatially large SES fragmentation of the abiotic landscape is a big challenge. This presentation examines the link between abiotic factors and mechanisms in World Heritage Sites, points out that in tourism governance research integrity of abiotic components is rarely analyzed, and argues about sustainable tourism based governance of such landscapes.
