Abstract
As the concept of ecotourism gained popularity around the world from around 1990s, the form of tourism that embraces natural environment is also promoted in Japan. However, one may wonder how Japan as a country came to care about promoting ecotourism. I will share how ecotourism became to be a part of national interests by looking at the Basic Policies for Ecotourism Promotion launched in 2008. Looking at news articles and policy documents on the ecotourism initiatives from 1980s to present, I suggest ecotourism as an example of constructing environmentality while reflecting various interests such as economic crisis.
