Northward shift of the extratropical transition of typhoons in the western North Pacific over the recent decades

Abstract

Long-term variability of the extratropical transition of typhoons over the western North Pacific (WNP) was investigated for the period from 1951 to 2015. The results showed that the southern limit of the extratropical transition of typhoons has shifted northward after 1990. The identified change was likely due to both SST warming over the WNP and weakened baroclinicity around Japan after 1990.
