Abstract

The Ongagawa River basin is a first-class water system that flows through the Chikuho region of Fukuoka Prefecture and empties into the Hibikinada Sea. The Onga River basin plays an important role as the main source of water for the Kitakyushu metropolitan area and the rest of the basin. The demise of the coal industry and the enforcement of the Water Pollution Control Law have led to improvements in the water environment. On the other hand, despite a basin population of more than 600,000 people, there are still concerns about the effects of human activities on water quality, such as a low sewerage system maintenance rate and water retention due to estuary weirs. This study attempts to clarify the characteristics of the water quality in the river basin using the results of the analysis of the main dissolved constituents of the river water in the Onga River basin, to examine the influencing factors, and to estimate the formation factors from the correlation with the results of the analysis of the water quality.
