Abstract
Background: The number of people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) is increasing worldwide. PD affects the activities and social participation of patients, although the relationship between nonmotor symptoms and activities or social participation is not clear. Aims: We determined whether nonmotor symptoms and demographic features are related to the duration of leisure or obligatory activities among homebound people with PD classified as Hoehn and Yahr stage III. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from a company providing a home nursing station and PD-specific commuting rehabilitation service. Thirty selected clients with PD classified as Hoehn and Yahr stage III were interviewed regarding the duration and nature of their obligatory and leisure activities in the last 1 month. Nonmotor symptoms were assessed using the Japanese version of the Movement Disorder Society–Unified PD Rating Scale (MDS–UPDRS) Part I and three other tests. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the participants’ demographic characteristics. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship between demographic features, including nonmotor symptoms, and the duration of obligatory or leisure activities. Results: The duration of leisure activities showed significant negative correlations with the MDS–UPDRS score (rs = −0.372, p = 0.043), depressive mood (rs = −0.387, p = 0.034), and anxiety (rs = −0.439, p = 0.015). Other factors were not related to the duration of leisure activities. Conclusion: Depressive mood and anxiety might be related to the duration of leisure activities in homebound people with PD classified as Hoehn and Yahr stage III.
