Abstract
This paper examines teachers’ and learners’ perceptions of the newly developed mathematics textbook “Maths Mela” for class 3 by NCERT. A sample of approximately 250 learners who are currently studying in class 4 and had previously studied the book Maths Mela in class 3 and 46 teachers who taught them in the year 2024-25 at schools of the Directorate of Education, GNCT Delhi, was chosen using a random sampling technique. The data collected through focus group discussions with learners and a perception scale administered to teachers, followed by interviews, was analyzed. The findings of the study include: Overall, learners and teachers perceived the book to be interactive, engaging, and excellent resource material. The book encouraged interactions and discussions with friends, siblings, and parents, which indicates the stress on using a plurality of resources. The textbook was perceived to be information-loaded by the teachers in terms of content load, reading load, overlapping of concepts in different chapters, and repetition of presentation of concepts in various ways. Implementation of any mathematics textbook will be effective only when the teachers are well informed about the philosophy, approach, and learning standards of mathematics.
