Prediction of factors affecting masticatory function after wearing removable dentures

Abstract

Purpose: There have been few reports about masticatory ability after wearing new dentures for a long time. In this study, we evaluated masticatory ability over time in patients wearing removable dentures, and investigated the factors that affect masticatory ability after wearing dentures.

Method: The subjects were patients who wore removable dentures and had obtained a masticatory score by the masticatory function test after wearing dentures for the first time and after a sufficient period of adjustment. The evaluation items, which included sex, age of the patient, experience of eating gummies, Eichner classification, number of remaining teeth and adjustment period, were assessed statistically.

Result: No significant difference was observed in mastication scores at each examination. In comparison between examinations, significant differences were observed in changes in mastication scores in terms of age, Eichner classification and adjustment period. No significant difference was observed in the comparison between the two groups.

Discussion: Factors that affect the temporary decline in masticatory score after prosthesis insertion are expected to include age, Eichner classification and adaptation to dentures. The above observation period is considered to be significant.

Conclusion: It is suggested that masticatory ability after wearing dentures may be affected by case details and age, and that long-term observation after wearing dentures is necessary to evaluate masticatory score.
