Abstract

Successful prosthodontic treatment requires recovering both function and esthetics, and appropriate material selection is important for achieving these outcomes. From a functional perspective, dental materials must possess sufficient mechanical strength to withstand occlusal force. From an esthetic standpoint, harmony with adjacent teeth and surrounding soft tissues is important. Materials used in dentistry can be classified into polymers, ceramics, metals, and composite materials. Dentists must thoroughly understand the characteristics of each material and select the most appropriate option according to the clinical situation.

The aim of this article is to revisit the fundamental principles of dental materials and to provide a basis for considering material selection in future clinical practice.
