Abstract

Patient: A 78-year-old man presented complaining of difficulty in chewing. The mandible was edentulous except for a retained root; and in the maxilla, two incisors were missing, three teeth were mobile, and there was one retained root. The maxilla was restored with a removable partial denture, complete and partial coverage metal crowns, and the mandible was fitted with a complete denture, establishing a tentative occlusal plane. The patient was followed -up for more than 3 years after treatment, and no severe problems were observed. Occlusal and clasp adjustments were performed as maintenance.

Discussion: The occlusion of this patient with elongated teeth and an irregular occlusal plane was modified by establishing a tentative occlusal plane, but extensive removal of tooth structures was required. Continual maintenance is needed to avoid dental discomfort.

Conclusion: Masticatory function can be improved by modifying elongated teeth and an irregular occlusal plane.
