Patient: A 77-year-old male complained of disturbance caused by instability of complete dentures, and discomfort when eating. The poor retention of the mandibular dentures was due to the inadequate shape of the denture base. After exploring mobility of oral mucosa and adjusting the individual tray border, a final impression was made with the closed mouth position. After the new complete dentures were inserted, the patient had no complaints and was highly satisfied.
Discussion: By considering the shape of the denture base and using the closed mouth impression technique, the retention of complete dentures can be improved.
Conclusion: In this case with severe bone resorption, appropriate exploration and choice of impression method were effective for obtaining a satisfactory outcome. The recovery of function using complete dentures with appropriate treatment and denture planning resulted in a good prognosis.
