Abstract

The Research Committee on the Problems of Librarians of the Japan Library Association released in 1974 a brief report entitled “Professionality of a Librarian (Final Report).” This report is the integration of study results by the committee in several years. It is the one and only document pertaining to the subject matter of the association, and is often referred to as such in relative literature. The purpose of this paper is to examine the points at issue in this report based on such literature.
As a result of the examination, the following points were found concerning this report:
(1) It has examined only a portion of the requirements and not the whole requirements for the professional librarian.
(2) It merely points out some abstract stipulations on the professionality of the librarian.
(3) It has entrusted an examination on the professional education for librarianship and the basis of qualifications for the professional librarian with other committee and division of the association. It has made no examination on these points.
(4) It has not comprehended the priority order of the requirements for the professional librarian and has given priority to setting a code for ethics.
