Abstract
Trace amounts of ytterbium in seawater were coprecipitated with iron(III) hydroxide, and the precipitate was dissolved in 2ml of 8mol/dm3 hydrochloric acid. Iron(III) ions were removed by extraction with 2, 6-dimethyl-4-heptanone, and a 20-μl aliquot of the aqueous phase was directly injected into a graphite furnace atomizer. Ytterbium in seawater was found to be (0.62-1.35)×10-9g/l.
