Chemical structure of degraded polymers were analyzed in the depth direction by infrared spectroscopy. The method was developed by combining the cutting technique with a microtome and the micro-analysis technique by FT-IR. It has enabled the measurement of the distribution of chemical structures in the depth direction with micron-ordered resolution. Its application to the studies on polymer degradation was confirmed to be useful for the evaluation of weathering tests, and for the analysis of the degradation mechanism and the migration of additives in polymers.
