The crystal structure of (R)-3-phenoxy-2-propanol-1-benzylammonium (R)-2-phenoxypropionate [(R)-BAPP·(R)-PPA] has been determined. In the crystal packing, the hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers are separated along the b-axis. The amphipathic-protonated BAPP molecule with two phenyl rings bridges two neighboring-hydrophobic layers. The N1-O4 chain of BAPP and the carboxy group of PPA are strongly recognized by each other, and they make the 9-membered ring connected by intermolecular-hydrogen bonds.
