We found benarthin, a new inhibitor of pyroglutamyl peptidase, in the fermentation broth of Streptomyces xanthophaeus MJ244-SF1. It was purified by column chromatography and centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) and then was isolated as a colorless powder. The binding of benarthin was competitive with substrate and its inhibition constant (Ki) was 1.2 × 10-6M.
