Abstract
The size of the cell bodies and the nuclei of 6 organs and also the thickness of epidermis in an elephant weighing 975kg and a mouse weighing 26g were measured. The results were as follows.
1. The thickness of skeletal muscle fibers in the elephant is several tunes as large as that of the mouse. But as for the cardiac muscle fibers, both are almost the same.
2. As for liver cells and parotid gland cells, the mouse is contrary to expectation larger than the elephant, especially the liver nuclei of the mouse are larger. The chief cells of the gastric gland in the elephant are a little larger, but any difference is hardly found in the size of nuclei.
3. The red blood cells of the elephant are about 2 times larger and its small lymphocytes are a little larger.
4. The epidermis of the elephant is much thicker, but any difference is hardly found in the size of nuclei in the deep germinal layer of both animals.
