Effect of Hydrocarbon on Formation of N2O via Catalytic NO Reduction

The formation of N2O in a mixture of NO, HC (Paraffin, Olefin), O2 and N2 was investigated experimentally in a tubular-flow reactor containing a three-way catalyst. The results obtained in these experimental conditions indicate that the catalytic oxidation activity of three-way catalyst for both the paraffin and olefin lowers with the decrease in the total number of carbon having in the compositions of hydrocarbon. The reduction of NO is enhanced by the presence of HC, and the formation of N2O from catalytic NO reduction is greatly dependent on the composition of hydrocarbon. The conversion of NO to N2O is higher in the presence of olefin than in the presence of paraffin, and there is a range of temperature in which the formation of N2O is enhanced in the presence of either paraffin or olefin. The maximum N2O concentration by the presence of olefin is approximately 100ppmv, which is four times higher than those for paraffin. The temperature of catalyst shown the maximum N2O concentrations rise from 300 to 450°C with the change of hydrocarbon composition from olefin to paraffin. Olefin enhances the formation of N2O from catalytic NO reduction more than paraffin in a NO/CH4/C2H6/C2H4/C3H8/C3H6/O2/N2 gas system.
