Abstract
In this study, many useful products from wood wastes such as construction scraps and thinning materials were obtained by sub-critical water hydrolysis reactions. The decomposition reaction of the wasted wood rapidly advanced at the reaction temperature of 550 K. At higher temperature above 583 K, a tar-like oil phase was obtained. The amount of total organic carbon (TOC) in an aqueous phase and the amount of the generated tar-like oil gave the maximum yields in the vicinity of the critical temperature of water. At the reaction temperature of 643 K and the reaction time of 5 min, 95% of the wood sample was decomposed, in which 53% of the sample was converted into oil. Hydrolysis experiments at various reaction times; 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 60 min, were performed to examine the effect of reaction time. In 613 K and 15 min, only glycolic and acetic acids were obtained in the aqueous phase. At longer reaction times, more tar-like oil phase was obtained. These results, therefore, would lead to that the composition of the product obtained by the sub-critical water hydrolysis can be controlled by reaction temperature and reaction time.
