Characteristics of Flavobacterium sp. Causing “Suminori” Disease in Cultivated Porphyra

Abstract

Morphological, physiological, cultural and biochemical characteristics of two bacterial strains isolated from diseasedPorphyrasp. layers were studied. The results of tests for identification show that both strains are identical to the genusFlavobacterium. Some biochemical properties particularly the aerobic acid production from carbohydrates were different from other previously reported species of the genusFlavobacterium. The results suggest that the bacterium isolated from diseasedPorphyrasp. is a new species of Flavobacterium.
