Three individuals of mesoparasitic copepods were recovered from the eyes of a horn dragonet Callionymus curvicornis Valenciennes, 1837 in a set-net fishery off Oki Island in Shimane prefecture, Japan. The individuals were identified as Phrixocephalus umbellatus Shiino, 1956 based on morphological characteristics. In Japan, the anchor worm, parasitic copepod, genus Phrixocephalus Wilson C. B., 1908 has been recorded mostly from the Pacific Ocean side, with few records from the Sea of Japan side and P. umbellatus has been recorded from Chiba Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, Mie Prefecture, Hyogo Prefecture (Sea of Japan side), and Nagasaki Prefecture. This report represents the first record of P. umbellatus from Shimane Prefecture in the Sea of Japan.
