Abstract

In order to get closer to the heart of the issues on the certification of archivists in Japan, it seems essential to look back to earlier discussions relating to this problem. Such an exercise will entrench the foundations of, and provide useful research materials for current discussions. This article presents some recommendations based on such retrospective approaches.

It should be noted that archivists should play the leading roles in the administration of archive institutions, and they should be trained as professionals in special educational institutions. In addition, it is necessary that the development of archival training is conducted in such a way as to link it closely to the infrastructure for archival research. Also it is essential to develop both a certification system and special personnel career structure for archivists in order that they can be recognized as a professional body in Japan.
