This paper constitutes part of a proposal “Towards the establishment of a professional qualification system for archivists” which has been put forward by Dr Takahashi and the author. First, the reason why we need a professional qualification system supported by post-graduate level education is explored, and secondly there is an analysis both of various overseas archival education courses and qualification systems, and Japanese experience in archival training. The paper concludes with a suggested education curriculum and the claim for the necessity of a professional qualification system suitable to Japanesesociety.
