Abstract

This research identifies irrigation pond managers' awareness of the significance of conserving the biodiversity in irrigation ponds in the East-Harima area, Hyogo Prefecture. The main findings of the study show that the ratio of all the irrigation pond managers in the area who had an interest in conserving the biodiversity in 2001 is 10.9%. In addition, irrigation pond managers who are interested in conserving the biodiversity have generally 1) awareness of loss of biodiversity in irrigation ponds, 2) interest in collaboration with urban residents and 3) experience in contact with bird and nature watchers at irrigation ponds.
