Abstract

In this study, Utambalila village in Mbozi district of Tanzania is chosen as a study area. In Mbozi district, about 98% of people rely on fuel wood as energy source and therefore proper forest management is needed for sustainable energy supply. The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of charcoal making on land-use change, and to investigate the charcoal production system, a relation between charcoal production and its stake holders. These facts became clear that after 1990, forest degradation caused by charcoal making was spread in this area and this situation has been related with not only local people but also government staff, and mostly people from other area. In this village, the forest management should be conducted with all stake holders including local people, charcoal buyer, charcoal maker and a government staff.
