This study examines emergent management through SDGs initiatives in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), based on the definition of “emergent activities” as activities that are spontaneously generated when SDG activities enhance the creativity of people working in a company and are strongly linked to intrinsic and self-determined motivation at work. Referring to Malmi and Brown's (2008) Management control systems package (MCSP), we set three research questions: existence of emergent activities, benefits of SDG activities, and relationships among control factors, and conducted semi-structured interviews with two companies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two companies. As a result, emergence activities were confirmed, and the unintended expansion of sales channels and advantages of SDG activities in recruiting human resources were confirmed. In addition, many cultural controls were confirmed, confirming further exploratory search for SDG activities and the expansion of exploratory activities. These results suggest that emergence-style management is centered on loose control, in which control by “control” is suppressed and rather voluntary activities are the main focus.
