Abstract

Perceptual processing to integrate distributed consonant information was investigated by measuring phonemic restoration rates of a noise-replaced stop consonant within a vowel-consonant-vowel (VCV) syllable in speeded and nonspeeded tasks. Reaction times to phonemic restoration were also measured. Both speeded and nonspeeded perceptual processing were found to use the distributed information in almost the same way. The processing time was short when the restoration rate was high, but it was long when the restoration rate was low.
