The present study reveals skills of which people proficient in jump rope double unders were not aware, with an investigation of technical points where these skills are important for perform ing consecutive double unders.
A jump rope tutorial book indicates that “jumping high” and “quickly swinging the rope” are important points for guidance with double unders. However, the gripping motion during contact with the ground is where changes were observed when people unskilled with double unders were in the process of improving their skills. This is considered an important skill for performing consecutive double unders. However, there was no awareness of this skill.
When the researchers themselves performed double unders on trampolines, they noticed that they were adjusting the timing at which they swung the grips to match their jumps. Swinging the grips to match the jumps is an important skill for performing consecutive double unders.
This skill was presented to children, who were then asked to work on practicing it. Of ten individuals who were not skilled at double unders, six gained the ability to perform ten or more consecutively. Many of the children felt that becoming aware of this skill and practicing it “was helpful”, and learning it produced results.
