In Japan the study of ball games has not been conducted soactively, and in consequence sufficient products have not been obtained. A major cause for it is the lack of understanding of the most basic thing, i.e., the tasks which must be tackled in the study of ball games. Then, six fields of research forming the core of the study of ball games were identified, and some important problems to be solved without delay in each field were presented. It is hoped eagerly that the problems presented in this paper will be investigated at large and "the general theory of ball games" will be built up in the near future.
