Abstract
1. The isolated liver cells lack entirely the power of lactic acid formation. These cells lack also power of consuming oxygen.
2. The power of consuming oxygen and the degree of glycolysis are affected by various dyestuffs in nearly the same manner, while the activity of lactic acid formation is affected a little differently.
3. The lactic acid formation is greatly affected during the preservation of liver tissue, while the oxygen consuming power shows only a slight change during the same period.
4. The rapid decrease in lactic acid forming activity during the preservation of liver tissue is due to a rapid decomposition of coenzyme for glyoxalase.
5. Glyoxalase activity is retained by liver cells for a long time even in repeatedly washed isolated liver cells.
6. The inability of lactic acid formation by isolated liver cells is not due to the lack of glyoxalase action, but to the lack of decomposition of hexose-molecule.
I wish to express my sincere thanks to Prof. S. Kakiuchi for his kind advice throughout the course of the investigation.
