The non-solvent space and the amount of the bound chloride of the blood serum were computed from its chlorine ion activity and its total chloride content experimentally estimated. The conclusions obtained are as follows:
1. The non-solvent space of the serum amounts to about 20 vol. %.
2. The chloride bound to protein molecules in the serum is about 0.006 mol, which is negligible in comparison with its total concentration, about 0.1 mol.
3. When a serum is diluted with water, its non-solvent space increases markedly. When diluted with a KCl solution, the increase in the non-solvent space becomes less with increased concentration of KCl.
