An unknown sulfur-containing amino acid which revealed a specific cobalt blue color with ninhydrin was isolated from a brown alga Undaria pinnatifida and identified as 1, 4-thiazane-3-carboxylic acid. The identification is based on the elementary analysis and other physical and chemical properties in comparison with the findings of Kuriyama et al. who isolated the acid from a red alga Chondria crassicaulis in 1960. The natural occurrence of the substance in sources other than the red alga Chondria crassicaulis had never been reported before. The yield of the pure crystalline 1, 4-thiazane-3-car-boxylic acid from 5kg. of the dried alga was about 1.3g.
The authors are grateful to Dr. M. Kuriyama of Hokkaido University for his advice and interest in the work, and to Dr. T. G. Samter of Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, Nagasaki, for his help during the preparation of the manuscript. The authors also thank Prof. T. Yoritaka of Nagasaki University for his constant interest and encouragement.
