Abstract

This volume provides critical evaluations of current research on DNA synthesis in vitro as well as details of up-to-date findings on the isolation of small DNA fragments capable of self-replication. The research reflects the wide-spread intereat generated by recent advances in the cloning of certain plasmids carrying replication origins.
In this special issue on DNA replication, the following articles are included:
I. DNA synthesis in vitro
(1) K. Arai, N. Arai (Department of Biochemistry, Stanford University)
Studies on DNA replication in cell-free systems from Escherichia coli.
(2) J. Ikeda (Department of Developmental Biology and Cancer, Albert Einstein College of Medicine)
In vitro synthesis of ΦX174 DNA and ΦXRFI DNA.
II. Minimum unit of self-replicating DNA
(1) A. Oka (Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University)
DNA regions essential for replication of colicin E1 plasmid.
(2) S. Yasuda (National Institute of Genetics)
Cloning of replication regions of various replicons.
(3) S. Hiraga, T. Miki (Institute for Virus Research, Kyoto University)
Plasmids carrying the replication origin of the becterial chromosome.
