Abstract
The role of water transport in the control of the elongation growth of plant stems was discussed by analyzing the growth equations. It was predicted that a water pump should be in activity during the elongation growth. The pump, however, was theoretically shown not to be a molecular entity but a highly organized semi-macroscopic system, i.e. the apoplast-canal system.
