With the accumulation of bird monitoring data, information on life-history, ecological and morphological traits of bird species is increasingly important for understanding the drivers of changes in their distribution and population sizes. Here we provide a species-level data set "JAVIAN Database (Japanese Avian Trait Database)" compiled for the analysis of life history, ecology and morphology of 493 bird species (excluding seabirds) in Japan. The data set includes information on habitat, nesting location, migratory status, diet, breeding parameters (clutch size, breeding system, etc.), body size, sexual dimorphism, hunting status and range size in the 1970s and 1990s. This data set should allow a comparative analysis and consequently contribute to the better understanding and conservation of bird species in Japan.
