Molecular phylogenetic analyses using chloroplast DNA were conducted in members of Lobelia sect. Hypsela, including L. loochooensis from the Ryukyu Archipelago of Japan and L. hongiana from mainland China. Results of the analyses are consistent with the previous interpretation that L. loochooensis and L. hongiana are sister and most closely related to L. fluviatilis from Australia. Furthermore, our analyses infer that the migration of the East Asian species lineage occurs from the Ryukyu Archipelago to mainland China.
