UVレジンを用いた動物プランクトン封入標本の製作法

An embedding method for zooplankton specimens in ultraviolet curable (UV-curable) resin was explored to propagate “plankton watching” for the general public and specialists. Formalin-fixed specimens (approximate final concentration: 10%) collected using a modified NORPAC net (mesh width: 0.33 mm) were prepared for embedding after freshwater displacement and alizarin red staining. Specimens were permeated stepwise in 99% glycerin over 5 days. Individual glycerin-soaked specimens were wiped, arranged, and coated with liquid resin in a silicone mold and cured using a UV light box. Final products were suitable for bright-field observation and photomicrography using a stereomicroscope or digital camera. Thus, resin-embedded zooplankton specimens can be safe and attractive preparations for exhibition as well as ornaments for children and adults.
