Abstract
Riccia nigrella DC. is recorded for the first time from Japan. It closely resembles Riccia sorocarpa Bisch. in appearance, but is distinguished from the latter by color of thallus and longpersistent epidermal cells. Description and illustrations to the species are given based on the Japanese material with some taxonomic and ecological notes.
