This is a brief review on the activities of studies on CELSS in Japan since 1982. The first report appeared as so-called blue book "CELSS Experiment Concepts of Space Station Missions" MS-SS-02 Rev.-1 by CELSS Experiment Concept Study Group, in April, 1984. The second was reported at the Work-Shop held at Calf. USA, in July, 1985 and published as NASA TM 88215 "Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems: CELSS '85 Workshop". The third was reported at COSPAR 26 at Toulouse France, in June, 1986. The fourth was reported at 16th ISTS at Sapporo, Japan in May, 1988. An educational book on CELSS concept was written by Nitta as "Construct Small Earth" at 1986.
