Abstract

It is a well known fact that the heart volume is a key factor of stroke volume, cardiac output and maximal oxygen uptake. We measured cardiac silhouette of senior high school judo champions, aged 16 to 18 years, by longitudinal method (1979-1980). To determine the heart volume, Rohrer-Kahlstrof method was used. The results were as follows:
1. The heart volume (ml) at standing posture were observed to be 935.5 ± 110.9(Judo,1979),923.4 ± 87.0 (Judo,1980) and 586.5 ± 82.2 (Non-athletes) in senior high school judo athletes and non-athletes respectively.
2. In senior high school judo athletes and non-athletes, the heart volume per kilogram body weight (ml/kg) were 9.9 ± 0.8 (Judo,1979),9.4 ± 1.0 (Judo,1980)and 10.3 ± 1.1 (Non-athletes) respectively.
3. A close relationship was found between the heart volume and the body weight with a correlation coefficient of r=0.8155 (p<O.01,1979), r=0.7589 (p<O.05,1980)in senior high school judo athletes respectively.
4. The regression equation for this relationship was as follows:
Y=6.64X+303.6 (1979) (Y=Heart volume)
Y=4,17X+505.8 (1980) (X=Body weight)
5. The heart volume per kilogram body weight had significantly correlation to the body weight with the coefficient of r=-0.5299 (p<O.05,1979), r=.0.8134(p<O.01,1980) respectively.
6. The regression epuation for this relation was as follow:
Y= 0.031X+12.8 (1979)Y= Heart volume per kilogram body weight
Y= O.049X +14.2 (1980) X=Body weight
